Pop Quiz: What CAN a brain still learn – even in late-stage dementia?  A LOT!

“Mom had such FUN in Betty’s Day Out!” — Cathy, La Grange Park, Illinois
Note:
Cathy’s Mom actually began learning Spanish in one afternoon of Betty’s Day Out™
better, and most important, Mom felt great about herself for ALL she CAN still do:  A LOT!

Learn Sudoku AND crosswords AND poker AND piano AND dance AND painting ... AND … AND … AND!  The little word “AND” is a very BIG word in Betty’s Love:  Boosting ALL parts of your brain gives it means to thrive and communicate even after plaques and tangles or other impairments affect cognition.  Betty’s Love Families prove every day that there is so much we CAN do to help our brains work.  There are so many ways we can IMPROVE them when they don’t.  We do everything-with-Love – AND in JOY!

Once your family finds the support you need and gets the information you deserve:  Get busy in Betty’s Day Out™ AND Betty’s Movie Madness™ AND Betty’s Brain Boosters … AND, AND, AND!  Read why AND is so important for ALL ages.    Even in your own home:  Just simple ADLS (“Activities of Daily Life like doing dishes, gardening, folding laundry, etc.) CAN boost Mom’s cognition AND meaningfulness!  Read this recent ‘news’ that’s NOT news to Betty’s Love … and remember:

There is so much families CAN do with JOY to boost cognition, connections, and quality of life.  AND:
The sooner you start engaging Mom & Dad, the longer they CAN remain at the highest possible levels of cognition and JOY!

All Betty’s Engaging Programs- and Activities-with-Love™ have been developed over 30+ years with families like yours.  They are complex, novel, and proven to fire up all of your brain, enhance its functions, and elevate your spirit.   In person, by phone, or via Internet, your family CAN learn what to do, why, and ‘how to’ engage your brains – wherever in the world you live.

Engaged in Betty’s Love, you and all generations of your family will:

  • Laugh, learn in, and boost your brains in programs like Betty’s Day Outand Betty’s Boot Camp.
  • Participate to your best abilities – and Betty’s Love RAISES that bar! – in our brain-engaging Activities-with-Love like language lessons, piano playing (or playing at), dancing, golfing, and making scrapbooks – and new, Joy-filled memories!
  • Be able to discern and maximize what’s working – and how to improve what’s not – and how to make the most of both cases.

Please join us early and often for Betty’s Activities-with-Love that help you get and keep your brain healthy, such as:

  • doing exercises in a pub-quiz/game-show format to nudge your memories and build new ones!
  • starting hobbies like golf, fishing, and memory scrapbooking – great for families!
  • building networks of friends – and remembering to forgive and forget!  (Pun intended.)
  • cooking á la Betty’s Love – boosting your brain your food with walnuts, dark chocolate, and healthy spices like turmeric
  • learning Salsa and other dances.  The complexities of dance bolster your brain and can your Mom help keep her balance.

Betty’s Three Things™ you can do today to boost your brain include:

1.  Practice ambidexterity – and not just with the remote control!  If you’re right handed, start to perform large-motor-skill tasks with your left hand – like vacuuming, brushing your teeth, unloading the dishwasher.  (Loading it differently every time is, literally, a great brain exercise!)  In time, move to fine-motor-skill tasks, like writing a grocery list, fastening jewelry, controlling your computer’s mouse with your left hand.  You might be frustrated (so remember to be patient with yourself!) but/and your brain will be better for simply trying ambidexterity.

2.  Learn to play the piano – and learn one simple song a week.  Piano playing is great for your brain – each hand, each foot, and your eyes all have to do different things simultaneously.  Purchase an electronic keyboard for $120 (or $20 at a garage sale) and a self-instruction starter songbook.  Again, simply trying to learn to play the piano is great for your brain.  Ask family or friends to be your audience once a week.  If you don’t want to perform it ‘in public’ (or even for family), resolve to ’perform’ for a party of one.  And remember to celebrate your success!

3.  Walk 10,000 steps each day, with a map - take a different route every day.   ‘Orienteer’ through your neighborhood using a map; let neighborhood landmarks chart your course.  If you or Mom can’t walk that 10,000 steps, watch a travel program on TV and follow its journey on an actual map.  You’ll exercise your body and your brain – and visiting places together ensures you and Mom will enJOY her journey, too!

Whatever you do … however you do it … please start doing it! In the best case, your family will live Joyfully ever after!  In the next-best case, you will sustain better balance, remain autonomous longer, maintain higher functionality, and you and your family will sustain the highest possible quality of life despite Alzheimer’s, dementia, and cognitive impairment.
