Insulin can improve delayed story recall…
… What was that?
You might hear of a story in the news that a study administering insulin through the nose “improves memory.”
What we think you need to know: Four-year study of a total of 104 participants with ‘amnestic mild cognitive impairment’ [i.e., partial or total loss of memory ascribed to mild cognitive impairment - that grey area between normal memory loss and clinically diagnosed (we hope) dementia] or ‘mild to moderate’ Alzheimer’s disease. Two dosage levels of insulin were administered by a nurse through the nose.
‘Delayed story recall’ is the ability to recall details of a story after a period of time. In this case:
1. Participants listened to a story with 44 bits of information.
2. Immediately thereafter, participants were asked to recall as many bits of information as possible.
3. 20 minutes later, participants were again asked to recall as many bits of information as possible.
This study’s results showed a minor improvement in the ability to remember bits of information. While this is a small study, its intent to study the ability of insulin to improve synapses is both newsworthy and hope inducing. However, the headlines ‘Insulin Improves Memory’ might be both misleading and unfairly hope engendering.
